Electricity access is often summarized as one national percentage. That average can hide a very different picture for people living in rural areas than for people living in cities. This project puts the World Bank's two estimates side by side so the difference stays visible.

Why this exists
The question.
A single national electricity-access rate can hide major differences between rural and urban communities. Comparing both estimates side by side makes those differences—and questionable records—easier to see.

Method and limits
How the project was built.
I captured the World Bank series for rural and urban electricity access for 217 countries and territories from 2000 through 2024, then matched each one to the World Bank's region data. The interface rounds displayed values to one decimal place and leaves missing years blank instead of estimating them. Yearly summaries include only records that have both rural and urban values. If rural access is reported as more than two percentage points higher than urban access, the record is flagged for review rather than presented as a real advantage. Each country or territory counts equally in the median, regardless of population.

In the 2024 data, 82 economies had both estimates available and at least one below 99.5%. Among them, the typical urban–rural difference was 24.7 percentage points, and 46 had a difference of at least 20 points.
Cambodia’s series moves from 6.6% rural and 60.6% urban access in 2000 to 98.6% and 100% in 2024, but the interface does not attribute that convergence to any policy or program.
One 2024 record reports rural access more than two points above urban access. The project flags that unusual result—and leaves missing years blank—instead of silently changing the source.
